DermaRite Recalls Skincare Products Over Infection Risk: What You Need to Know
DermaRite Industries has issued a voluntary recall of over 30 skincare products due to potential microbial contamination. The recall, initiated "out of an abundance of caution," involves products including lotions, shampoos, and sanitizers that may be contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc). This recall has expanded from an initial hand soap recall in August and affects products distributed nationwide in the United States and Puerto Rico.
The Infection Risk
B. cepacia poses a significant risk, especially to individuals with weakened immune systems. According to DermaRite, the bacteria can lead to serious and life-threatening infections, including sepsis. The infection could spread into the bloodstream, potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis, particularly if used by immunosuppressed individuals or those caring for them. Even in healthy individuals with minor skin lesions, the use of contaminated products may result in local infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that while B. cepacia poses little threat to healthy people, it can be harmful to those with weakened immune systems, particularly those with cystic fibrosis.
