Accused Sydney Shooter Faces Court on 25 Charges, Lawyers Clash Over Representation

Sydney Shooting: Man Charged After Croydon Park Incident Injures 16

A 60-year-old man, identified as Artemios Mintzas, has been charged with multiple offenses after allegedly opening fire on a street in Croydon Park, Sydney, on Sunday night. The incident left 16 people injured and prompted a large-scale police response.

Details of the Shooting

Artemios Mintzas allegedly fired "about 50" shots from a 30-calibre rifle from his apartment window above a business on Georges River Road, targeting pedestrians, cars, and buildings. The shooting spree lasted for nearly two hours, plunging the inner west suburb into lockdown. Sixteen people sustained injuries, primarily from shattered glass, but one man was seriously injured after being shot in the neck while in a car.

  • The incident occurred on Sunday night, around 7:45 PM.
  • Shots were allegedly fired from a first-storey apartment.
  • Up to 100 rounds may have been fired, according to police estimates.

Arrest and Charges

Tactical officers stormed the unit and arrested Mintzas around 9:30 PM, seizing a rifle and ammunition. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries and later charged with 25 offences, including 18 counts of shooting with intent to murder, possessing an unregistered firearm, and unlicensed possession of ammunition.

Court Appearance and Legal Representation

Mintzas appeared in Burwood Local Court on Tuesday. A dispute arose between lawyers over who would represent him, with both Diana Sabouni and Dymphna Hawkins claiming to have instructions. Ultimately, Mintzas confirmed his wish for Hawkins to be his legal representative. He did not apply for bail, and his case will return to court on December 3.

Victim Information

Sixteen people were treated for injuries. Most injuries were minor, caused by shattered glass. One man underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the neck and is expected to survive. NSW Police acting Superintendent Stephen Parry noted that it was "incredible" that nobody died.

Accused Shooter: Artemios Mintzas

Artemios Mintzas works as a customer service attendant for Sydney Trains. Police stated that he has very little history with police and no apparent links to terror, organized crime, or mental health issues. He is a father, and detectives are investigating his motives and how he obtained the gun.

Community Response

The incident shocked the community. Local businesses were forced to shelter inside as shots rang out. Premier Chris Minns condemned the shooting, praising the "incredible bravery" of the police officers and emergency services who responded.
