Copenhagen Airport Shutdown: Police Suspect 'Capable Operator' Behind Advanced Drone Maneuvers

Copenhagen Airport Shut Down: Police Suspect "Capable Operator" Behind Drone Activity

Copenhagen Airport was forced to temporarily shut down operations on Monday, September 22nd, due to sightings of "large drones" in the area. Danish police are now investigating the incident and believe the drones were flown by an operator with advanced skills. The shutdown impacted tens of thousands of passengers as flights were diverted.

Details of the Incident

Investigators described the drones' movements as complex, noting they maneuvered in various patterns, including switching their lights on and off and approaching the airport from multiple directions. The devices disappeared after several hours. Chief Superintendent Jens Jespersen told reporters that while no suspects have been identified, the incident indicates both intent and the availability of sophisticated tools.

“We have concluded that this was what we would call a capable operator,” Jespersen stated. "It's an actor who has the capabilities, the will and the tools to show off in this way."

Impact on Air Traffic

The closure of Copenhagen Airport lasted for four hours. During that time, 31 flights were diverted, resulting in approximately 100 flight cancellations or delays. Around 20,000 passengers were affected. Oslo Airport also experienced a three-hour shutdown due to drone sightings.

Potential Links to Other Incidents

Jespersen added that it was too early to determine if the drone incidents in Denmark and Norway are connected. The airport shutdowns followed a series of disruptions at European airports. A cyberattack had previously knocked out check-in and boarding systems at several airports, including London Heathrow, and airports in Berlin and Brussels.
