Norway Seizes Drone Near Oslo Airport; Regional Airspace Threats Prompt EU-NATO Talks

Norway Police Seize Drone Near Oslo Airport Amidst Regional Disruptions

Norwegian authorities confiscated a drone operated by a foreigner near Oslo Airport on Thursday, following a week of disruptions caused by drone sightings at airports in both Norway and Denmark. The incident raises concerns about airport security and potential coordinated actions.

Details of the Drone Seizure

According to Lisa Mari Lokke, head of prosecutions at Norway’s eastern police district, the man, in his 50s, was flying the drone within a restricted area on Wednesday evening. While the drone activity did not impact air traffic, police were alerted around 9:00 pm local time about a drone entering the airport’s no-fly zone. Upon arrival, officers found the man piloting the drone, landed it safely, and seized the device.

The individual was not arrested but will be questioned by police. Ms. Lokke declined to specify the man's nationality. The incident is under investigation.

Recent Drone-Related Disruptions

The seizure occurred against a backdrop of increased vigilance following recent drone sightings that caused temporary shutdowns at several Scandinavian airports. Both Copenhagen and Oslo airports experienced disruptions earlier in the week due to reports of drones in the vicinity.

  • Monday Evening Disruption: Air traffic at Oslo Airport was suspended for three hours following reports of a possible drone sighting. Lights were seen in the air, and an investigation is ongoing to determine if they were indeed from a drone.
  • Danish Drone Incursions: Neighboring Denmark has also experienced several drone incursions this week, prompting investigations into the potential perpetrators.

Investigation and Potential Connections

Despite the timing and proximity to other incidents, Lisa Mari Lokke stated that, "At this stage, we see no connection" between this specific seizure and the earlier disruptions. However, authorities are taking the matter seriously given the potential security implications.

EU and NATO Discussions

Looking ahead, countries on the EU and NATO eastern flank are scheduled to discuss future drone defences with Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, with Denmark invited to participate. The series of incidents has highlighted the need for enhanced security measures and international collaboration.
