Florida’s Division of Hotels and Restaurants routinely inspects restaurants, food trucks and other food service establishments for public health and cleanliness issues.
The reports are public information.
During recent inspections, an Outback Steakhouse location in Manatee County was cited after inspectors found signs of roach and other bug activity on site.

High priority: An inspector observed four live roaches in an electrical closet and one live roach in a chemical storage closet.
High priority: An inspector observed approximately five small flying black insects in a dish area.
High priority: Raw shrimp was stored over mushroom in a reach-in cooler drawer on the cook line. Corrective action was taken.
Intermediate: A soda dispensing gun was soiled with debris and black mold-like substance. Corrective action was taken.
Basic: An inspector noted three basic violations, including wiping cloth sanitizer that was not strong enough and an employee beverage stored next to clean silverware.
Inspectors conducted a follow-up visit the next day. No further pest activity was noted, and the restaurant met inspection standards.

The agency is required to inspect every licensed restaurant at least once per year, but new and “high-risk” establishments tend to be inspected more frequently.
When an emergency shutdown order is given by an inspector, it must first be reviewed and approved by agency supervisors. In order for a business to reopen, an inspector will continue visiting the establishment daily until compliance is met. Some citations may include a financial penalty.
