Britain's Longest-Serving Lollipop Lady Retires After 56 Years of Dedicated Service

Longridge Says Goodbye: Britain's Longest-Serving Lollipop Lady Retires After 56 Years

After an impressive 56 and a half years, Irene Reid, 85, has retired from her role as a lollipop lady at Longridge Church of England Primary School. Serving since 1969, she's believed to be the UK's longest-serving crossing guard and was recognized with an MBE in 2012 for her dedication to road safety.

A Career Dedicated to Safety

Mrs. Reid has been a constant presence on Berry Lane, ensuring the safety of generations of children. She began her career wanting a job that fit around her family, and although initially hesitant about wearing the uniform, she quickly embraced the role. Her commitment never wavered, even in the face of challenging weather. Irene even assisted the school’s current Deputy Head Teacher, Carmen Dewhurst, when she was a pupil herself.

A Fond Farewell

“It was a wonderful last day,” Irene Reid stated. “I've loved every minute of it. It has been 56-and-a-half years and you can't forget the half! It has been so lovely but it's a very responsible job looking after one person's child let alone a 100 a year.” She also admitted that the decision to retire wasn't easy, stating, "You've got to be completely fit to look after other people's children, and I know I'm not." In jest, she added she would now "just stand there and glare at anyone else" doing the job.

Community Appreciation

Carmen Dewhurst, Deputy Head Teacher, whose own children were also helped by Mrs. Reid, described the day as "emotional." She added, "We all love her so, so much - she's a massive part of our school family. All weathers, come rain or shine, wild weather or snow, she was always there and never let us down. She knows all of us, all our names, even as adults."

  • Started working as a lollipop lady in 1969.

Retirement Plans

Looking forward, Mrs. Reid plans to spend more time with her family, including her 10 great-grandchildren. She also intends to indulge in her hobbies, such as knitting and sewing, and volunteering at her local charity shop. Irene also plans on spending time with her granddaughter’s rescue dogs and visiting more of her family.
