NFL Week 2: Giants Stick With Wilson Amid QB Doubts, Dolphins Face Early Crossroads, Fields' Future With Jets Debated

NFL Week 2: Buzz, Questions, News & Fantasy Football Tips

Week 2 of the NFL season is upon us, and league insiders Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano are here to break down the latest news and buzz. Week 1 raised many questions, including the Giants' quarterback situation, the Dolphins' struggles, and Justin Fields' potential as the Jets' long-term solution. This article covers these topics along with fantasy football implications and updates.

Giants' QB Plan: Has Anything Changed?

Graziano reports that, as of now, the Giants' plan is to continue with Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback in Week 2. Coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka have a specific development strategy for Jaxson Dart, requiring him to reach specific benchmarks before he's deemed ready. They are drawing on past success stories such as Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes to inform their plan.

Fowler adds that benching Wilson after Week 1 would mean paying him over $10 million for a single game. The Giants are aiming to stick to their plan, allowing Dart time to learn. Wilson, despite being a declining player, should improve against the Cowboys, providing valuable experience.

Stephen A. Smith contends that Jaxson Dart should start at quarterback for the Giants sooner rather than later.

Dart's stellar preseason has expedited the process. The Giants' staff views him as a fast learner and highly motivated. Graziano suggests that if Wilson struggles in Week 2, the pressure to start Dart will increase. Jameis Winston could be considered as an interim option before Dart is ready.

Fowler observed Winston connecting on a deep ball during the Giants' joint practice with the Jets, suggesting he could be a fearless option. Implementing a package for Dart within Wilson's offense remains a possibility.

Dolphins: Panic Button Already?

Fowler states that the panic button hasn't been pressed yet in Miami, but it's in sight. After an uninspired Week 1 performance against the Colts, concerns are emerging about the roster's overall talent and player leadership. The Dolphins moved on from key players, replacing them with cost-effective options that may not be as capable. Finding strong leaders within the locker room is crucial.

Graziano believes the Dolphins need a Week 2 win more than any other team. The team looked disastrously dreadful against the Colts, raising concerns that they could be the league's worst team. Fowler notes that Tyreek Hill trade rumors might resurface if the losing persists. The Chiefs could be a potential destination, needing a boost of explosiveness.

However, Graziano questions Hill's current performance and off-field issues, including domestic violence allegations, which could affect trade interest.

Justin Fields: The Answer for the Jets?

Graziano is cautiously optimistic, "renting with an option to buy." Fields impressed in his first game with the Jets, showing previously elusive accuracy. If he has improved significantly as a passer, the Jets can scheme around his limitations and find success. Fowler is less convinced, describing himself as "buying a low-cost duplex that I can rent out if I want to move."

Fields has a lot to offer, but his career record is 14-45. While a resurgence is possible, Fowler is hesitant to believe he can pass with consistent precision. The Jets signed him as a bridge quarterback, and that's likely his role. However, the supporting cast on offense is strong, particularly along the offensive line.

Graziano noted that the Jets trust Fields to throw more than expected. Garrett Wilson is a true No. 1 receiver, and the team likes their running backs. The loss of guard Alijah Vera-Tucker is a concern. Fowler believes offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand managed the game well for Fields, utilizing a balanced approach. Asking Fields to be a volume thrower could be problematic, but scheming easier throws will help him thrive.

RB Hierarchy: Clarity in Week 1

Fowler notes that the Bears-Vikings game clarified the RB situation for both teams. In Minnesota, Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones Sr. split snaps nearly evenly, with Mason being the more explosive runner. On the other side, D'Andre Swift dominated snaps for the Bears, solidifying his role as the No. 1.

Graziano states that the Jaguars' situation became clearer after Travis Etienne Jr. received 19 of 26 RB touches and after they traded Tank Bigsby to the Eagles. Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen Jr. remain on the roster. Etienne fits best on early downs. Fowler adds that the hope is that Tuten can become a home run hitter, easing the load on Etienne.

Fowler heard positive reports about Jacory Croskey-Merritt in Washington, and he delivered with 82 yards and a touchdown. Austin Ekeler will remain a factor. Graziano expects Croskey-Merritt to be their main guy along with Ekeler. Javonte Williams is the Cowboys' top running back. Kenneth Gainwell should have a significant role ahead of Kaleb Johnson in Pittsburgh.

More Notes for Week 2

Graziano's Notes

  • Emeka Egbuka's two touchdown catches were a highlight of Tampa Bay's win. Graham Barton's performance at left tackle impressed the Buccaneers. He had previously played center.
  • Von Miller played over 40% of the defensive snaps for the Commanders. He is motivated by his love for football.
  • The Lions extended Jameson Williams' contract but haven't reached an agreement with Aidan Hutchinson.
  • The Jalen Carter discipline sets a new precedent for unsportsmanlike acts.
  • The Chiefs are frustrated by injuries and suspensions impacting their wide receiver room.
  • The Steelers' coaching staff was pleased with how Aaron Rodgers spread the ball around in the victory.
  • The Texans' offensive coordinator change didn't have a stellar debut.
  • The Bills believe Keon Coleman has taken a major step forward in his second season.

Fowler's Notes

  • Matt LaFleur asks Josh Jacobs if he’s ready for a big workload.

Expert Pick Analysis
Ayrton Ostly Jaguars RB Travis Etienne Jr. OVER 58.5 rushing yards at Cincinnati Bengals (-115) Etienne led the Jacksonville backfield with 16 carries, while Bengals allowed just 49 rushing yards in their opener but against the Browns led by Jerome Ford and Dylan Sampson. Etienne is more dynamic than Ford.
Jacob Camenker Chicago Bears (+6) at Detroit Lions (-110) The Bears have been a thorn in the Lions' side in recent seasons. Jared Goff has a poor record without Johnson or McVay calling his games.
Jack McKessy Browns QB Joe Flacco OVER 244.5 passing yards vs. Ravens (-115) Flacco's history of high passing volume with the Browns, and the Ravens' trouble stopping opposing passers sets Flacco up for a solid outing.
Nick Brinkerhoff Jets RB Breece Hall OVER 57.5 rushing yards vs. Buffalo Bills (-115) Hall shined in the opener, and the Jets aren't shy about their desire to become the Detroit Lions of the East Coast – a run-first squad that plays off the strength of their offensive line.
Tom Viera Patriots TE Hunter Henry OVER 3.5 Receptions (+100) Henry tied for the team lead with eight targets in Week 1. The Patriots tight end has finished with at least four receptions in eight of nine healthy games with Maye.
